American Idol Season 7 runner-up David Archuleta made an exciting announcement on social media this week. The singer will be appearing in a live production of the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat next year. Not only that, but he’ll be playing the title role.

David Archuleta to Star in Musical Next Year

“Taking a step into new territory,” Archuleta wrote on Instagram to announce the news. “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Starting July 2022 at The Tuacahn Amphitheatre.”

According to the theater’s website, Archuleta will play the title role of Joseph in this new production of the biblical musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, which first premiered in 1968. The show will run from July 16 to October 20, but Archuleta will only appear until September 3.

Tuacahn Amphitheatre is in an outdoor venue in Utah that’s surrounded by red rock cliffs. According to the website, Archuleta’s shows will only be available to Season Package Holders until Spring 2022. The production will be directed and choreographed by Derryl Yeager.

Archuleta Is No Stranger to Utah

Archuleta was born in Miami, but his family moved to a suburb of Salt Lake City, Utah, when he was six years old. So the location of his upcoming musical performance isn’t new to him. He’s also a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as Mormon.

The 30-year-old singer has performed worship songs such as “I Know He Lives” and “What a Beautiful Name.” He also sang “Think of Me,” from The Phantom of the Opera, during Andrew Lloyd Webber Week on American Idol in 2008. So Archuleta has some experience singing about religious themes, as well as musical theater.

Still, this upcoming gig is clearly a new direction for him as an artist. We’re excited to see where he goes from here. Could Broadway be next for him?
