The first season of Queen of the Universe came to a close on Thursday, as Brazilian contestant Grag Queen, aka Grégory Mohd, was named the winner. She beat American Idol alum Ada Vox in the new singing competition for drag queens, taking home $250,000.

Grag Queen Wins ‘Queen of the Universe’

Thursday’s finale came down to American drag queens Ada Vox and Aria B. Cassadine, as well as Grag Queen, who is from Brazil. Third place went to Aria, which meant it all came down to Ada and Grag. At the end of the show, host Graham Norton announced Grag as the winner.

For the finale, the three finalists performed two songs each. Ava performed “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka, as well as “Open Arms” by Journey. Aria sang “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and “This is the Moment” from the Jekyll & Hyde musical.

Winner Grag Queen performed the holiday classic “Jingle Bell Rock,” as well as “Rise Up” by Andra Day. Grag has shown off both her voice and personality this season in performances of songs like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper and “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse.

Grag’s alter ego Grégory also opened up about his difficult experience growing up in Brazil, sharing that he had been through conversion therapy for his sexuality. He got emotional as he shared how hard it is for LGBTQ+ people in his country, and how he wanted to use his platform to speak out.

Grag Queen Reacts to Her Win on Instagram

It seemed like Ada Vox might be the one to beat on Queen of the Universe this season, as she showed off the same powerful voice she brought to American Idol Season 16. But one look at fan engagement on the show’s Twitter page showed that Grag was a definite favorite.

Grag reacted to her win on Instagram Thursday, writing her caption in Portuguese. “The Queen of the Universe just wants to thank you for everything you guys have done… I’ve never been so HAPPY!!!” she wrote. “Don’t stop dreaming, because I once heard that you just had to have faith that things would start to flow… Who knew?”

Congratulations to Grag Queen on her win. You can stream the finale of Queen of the Universe on Paramount+.
