One of Donald Trump’s biggest advantages over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election came among members of the military and their families, Morning Consult/POLITICO exit poll data shows.
More than half (57 percent) of voters from military households cast their ballots for the Republican president-elect on Nov. 8, compared with just 39 percent who backed the former secretary of State.
Morning Consult first reported on military families’ preference for Trump back in mid-March during the primary process. At the time, 47 percent of those voters were backing him, compared with 38 percent who said they’d vote for Clinton.
By the time the race moved into Election Day, Trump doubled his margin with those voters.
Among the entire American electorate, Trump was also slightly favored over Clinton on the issue of terrorism and defense.
